Suburban Rail Loop East – Tunnels South | Transport

Suburban Rail Loop East, Tunnels South CPB Contractors, as a member of Suburban Connect, has been selected by the Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) to build the first major package of tunnelling works for the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) in Victoria.

The Suburban Rail Loop will deliver a 90km rail line linking every major train service from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line via Melbourne Airport, better connecting Victorians to jobs, retail, education, health services and each other.

The Tunnels South contract, awarded to Suburban Connect, includes 16kms of tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley (which will be Victoria’s longest tunnel), 55 cross passages, 2 portal structures, and 2 station box excavations and supports.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be launched from a recycling site in Clarinda instead of the nearby train stabling site in Heatherton, with four TBMs to be used instead of six.

A ‘ground freezing’ technique will also be used to build safety passages between the twin tunnels, allowing passages to be constructed below ground instead of from the surface, reducing disruption to residents and local road traffic by 90 per cent and preventing disruptions for nearly 100 homes and businesses.

This project will not only provide critical transport connectivity for the city of Melbourne, it will also deliver 24,000 jobs across the life of the project and boost hundreds of small local businesses.

CPB Contractors acknowledge the Wurundjeri and Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional and continuing custodians of the lands on which Suburban Rail Loop- Tunnels South will be delivered.
